Sony unveils 2-layer stacked CMOS image sensor tech for mobile devices – TechNave

Over the years, an increasing number of people are relying on smartphones for casual photography. Mobile image sensors have improved so much, causing a decline in the use of compact cams. Now, Sony wants to improve it further with its new image sensor tech.
Recently, Sony announced that it has developed the world’s first stacked CMOS image sensor technology with what’s called 2-layer Transistor Pixel. Instead of sharing the same layer, the photodiodes and pixel transistors are separated into separate layers, with the former stacked over the other.

As you would expect, this effectively doubles the number of photodiodes and pixel transistors. According to Sony, this new tech has double the saturation signal level of regular mobile image sensors. It also delivers a wider dynamic range and reduces noise. In other words, the 2-layer stacked CMOS tech should improve the image quality of photos taken on a mobile device.
If you want more details about it, you can check the official announcement. Anyway, are we reaching a point where compact cameras would be edged out of the market? Let us know what you think in the comments, and stay tuned to TechNave for more news like this.
