After Apple pulled the power adapters from its smartphone retail boxes, Samsung also jumped on board. However, as a result of this, both companies have faced scrutiny and sanctions from governments all over the world. Apple is facing more fines in Brazil for failing to include a charger with its new iPhones. Apple says that removing the power adapter reduces its yearly carbon emissions by 2 million metric tonnes due to reduced packing, which allows it to pack more boxes on a single shipping pallet. However, this also profits the company as it eliminates the need to ship power adapters and EarPods, while also saving money on shipping costs. Similarly, Samsung made the same transition with its flagship smartphones.
Now, a judge in Brazil ordered Apple to compensate a buyer the equivalent of $1,081 as the company’s decision to not ship the power brick violated consumer laws.
Samsung was also fined for failing to include a charger in its box. Furthermore, both companies have also been charged in Sao Paulo by the consumer protection body ‘Procon’. Fortaleza’s Procon imposed a fine of $5.2 million. However, it is unclear if that figure is individual or collective.
Apple is said to have saved more than $6.5 billion in shipping and other costs since removing the charger from the box. However, both brands are still being sued by over 900 Procons around Brazil, who may soon initiate administrative actions against Apple and Samsung.
