India is the second largest games market in the world and also the fastest growing market in Asia-10 for both revenue and gamers, reported Niko Partners, a market research and consulting firm that covers video games, esports, and streaming in Asia and West Asia. The firm published the findings in its 2022 India Games Market report.
According to the Niko Partners, India’s PC and mobile game markets are projected to generate player spending of $704.5 million in 2022 with 396.4 million gamers, making up 50.2 per cent of all gamers in Asia-10. The firm also published its 5-year forecast, estimating the spending to reach $1.4 billion in 2026 with 630 million gamers in the country.
India is a mobile-first market. As per the Niko Partners report, 98.8 per cent of gamers play on the mobile platform, which accounts for 85 per cent of total market revenue. “India gamers spend an average of 14.1 hours per week on mobile games and India has the highest proportion of mobile gamers across the Asia-10 region that play over 5 hours per week,” reported the market research firm.
Niko says that the tendency to pay has increased among gamers, claiming that not only the number of spenders is rising in the country but also spending per user. It reported that 34 per cent of gamers in India spent money on games this year.
However, the firm believes that the growth next year will be lower than in 2022 because it will witness the first full-year impact of the BGMI ban in the country. The growth rate could fall even more if additional mobile games are banned in 2023, Niko said.
“India has quickly become one of the most important markets that we track and is the fastest growing market by both revenue and gamers in the Asia-10 region,” said Lisa Hanson, president of Niko Partners. “India’s nearly 400 million gamers account for over half of the 788 million gamers in Asia-10 and are a formidable force to be understood and served by developers and publishers.”
As per the report, China currently has the largest gamer base in the world. Japan and Korea are reportedly the most mature markets in the Asia-10 region.
