OnePlus recently disclosed its plans to deliver four years of software updates to ‘select’ devices starting in 2023. Following this, now Oppo has also joined this race and revised its software update cycle and will now offer 4 years of software updates to compete with Samsung which was earlier the only Android manufacturer who did so. This new update cycle is intended for all users worldwide.
Just like OnePlus, starting in 2023, Oppo will offer four major ColorOS updates as well as five years of security updates. This will also be for select flagship phones. The newly released Oppo Find N2 series’ flip variant, which is also expected to make its global debut soon, may also receive four years of updates. Additionally, the new Find X series will also likely be a part of this new update cycle.
However, it’s not sure that these four years of software updates are confirmed to be new Android versions, as they can also be new ColorOS versions based on old Android versions.
This news could ultimately push other OEMs to standardise on this method. Oppo, OnePlus, and Samsung still lag behind Apple, which provides up to six years of software updates, but they are surely a step ahead of Google, whose Pixel phones only receive three years of such updates.
