China undeniably holds the doyen status when it comes to smartphone manufacturing, but things might have slowly started to change, especially when it comes to Google and Apple. While it is already clear that Apple wants to diversify its manufacturing processes by exploring other countries, Google too seems to be taking cue. A new NYT report claims that the tech giant is planning on moving the production of its Pixel smartphones to Vietnam.
The company is said to be focusing on expanding an existing facility in the country, that already manufactures the Pixel 4a, 5a, and 6a.
Google’s reasons are not very different from Apple. China’s zero tolerance policy towards COVID-19 means manufacturing units are shut for days, hindering the entire production line. In fact, a new report by Nikkei Asia claims that extended strict lockdowns, owing to China’s zero-COVID policy, have significantly slowed down production of the upcoming iPhone 14 series.
Besides the pandemic, there’s also the increased tariffs and a constant tussle between the US and China. While one country houses the companies, the other manufactures their products. Rising tensions between the two powers too affect the manufacturing process.
The biggest benefactors of this shift seem to be Vietnam, followed by India. Several products, like the iPads, Xbox gaming consoles, Amazon’s Fire TV devices, and several others, that were only manufactured in China a few years ago, are now made in Vietnam and India.
In fact, with the iPhone 14 series, Apple will be manufacturing the latest iPhone series in China and India simultaneously. The development is unprecedented. It is also being seen as an indication of times to come, especially with rising geopolitical tensions between China and other countries.
With such phased production changes, the companies seem to be ensuring that the shift out of China is only seen as an experiment, and not as signs of things to come.
